Lisa Banes has died at the age of 65 after being hit by a scooter in New York, according to New York Police Department (NYPD).

Banes was best known for playing Marybeth Elliott, the mother of Amy (played by Rosamund Pike) – the titular Gone Girl in David Fincher’s 2014 psychological thriller. She also appeared in films like A Cure for Wellness and Cocktail.

On June 4, she was struck by a motorized scooter in a hit-and-run collision in New York City. She was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital with a traumatic brain injury. She succumbed to a head injury on June 14.

NYPD confirmed to the BBC that Banes was hit by a scooter as she walked across a pedestrian crossing in Manhattan on 4 June.

The police department said in a statement, “The scooter then fled the location, continuing northbound. There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.”

Banes’ wife Kathryn Kranhold paid tribute on Twitter, writing, “My Lisa. Our #lisabanes Our huge loss.”

Actor and director Seth MacFarlane paid tribute by saying Banes’ death was “a tremendous loss.”:

He tweeted, “I am deeply saddened at the news of Lisa Banes’ passing. We had the good fortune to work with her on The Orville this past year. Her stage presence, magnetism, skill, and talent were matched only by her unwavering kindness and graciousness toward all of us. A tremendous loss…”

Born on July 9, 1955, in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Banes studied acting at the Juilliard School in New York City. She rose to prominence in the 1980s in TV shows and Broadway stage plays.

She was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1984 for Isn’t It Romantic?. Banes won a 1981 Theatre World Award for her performance as Alison Porter Off-Broadway in Look Back in Anger.
