James Wiseman, a professional basketball player, has undergone successful surgery after picking up a meniscus injury.

A torn meniscus is one of the most common knee injuries, according to Mayo Clinic. Any activity that causes you to forcefully twist or rotate your knee, especially when putting your full weight on it, can lead to a torn meniscus.

Wiseman, who plays for Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA), underwent surgery Thursday at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles to repair a right meniscal tear. Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery.

The 20-year-old will begin rehab immediately and will miss the remainder of the 2020-21 season. He is expected to return for the 2021-22 campaign.

The team said an update on Wiseman’s progress will be provided in September.

A few days after Wiseman suffered a meniscus injury on a dunk attempt, the team announced that his rookie season is over. On Thursday, the team took to Twitter to announce Wiseman’s surgery, writing, “Warriors center James Wiseman underwent successful surgery today to repair a right meniscal tear.”

Wiseman appeared in 39 games for the Warriors this season, averaging 11.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in 21.4 minutes per game while shooting 51.9 percent from the field.

He ranks third among rookies in rebounding, fifth in scoring, fourth in field goal percentage and fifth in blocks (0.92 per game).

Wiseman will miss Summer League and a typical offseason of development. This is probably a brutal blow for Wiseman who did not have a normal offseason in his rookie year, missed training camp, and only played 39 games this season.
