Here’s some good news for unemployed or underemployed in Texas because help is on the way.

Millions of newly unemployed people can get $600 per week to their unemployment benefits. They can also get some aid for independent contractors and self-employment, who previously did not qualify.

However, the stimulus package has one big assumption: people are able to apply online.

One should apply for unemployment benefits as soon as they are unemployed or underemployed as the claim is likely to start the week they complete the registration.

People can go to the website ui.texasworkforce.org or call 1-800-939-6631 Monday-Friday 8 am to 6 pm central if they do not have internet access.

You need a Social Security number or Alien Registration Number, along with your last employer’s business name and address.

Financial and economic experts have been monitoring the potential effects of the coronavirus on Texas’ international trade. They are adopting the tone of public health officials, advising people to be prepared, be prudent, but do not panic.

They believe it is just a matter of time before there is a major disruption in the global supply chain, which could affect the state’s economy.

Rep. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas, said Texas should brace for a hit. The state is the world’s 10th largest economy.

“About 1 million jobs in the Texas economy are dependent on international trade,” said Anchia. “It is impossible to contemplate that there could be no impacts and further, more dramatic impacts.”
