In men who have no history of cardiovascular disease, erectile dysfunction (ED) pills, such as Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil), and Levitra (vardenafil) are safe.

The three rivals ED drugs belong to the same class of therapeutic agents called PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitors so they have the same effect when it comes to treating impotence in men.

Like Viagra and Levitra, Cialis helps sexually impotent men to experience stronger and durable erections for satisfactory sex.

But is Cialis safe for the heart?

Cialis is generally safe for ED patients with healthy hearts. However, men with heart disease are advised to seek medical advice before using the yellow pill. Some men with serious heart disease cannot use Cialis under any circumstances.

Cialis has an effect on the blood vessels or arteries. Most arteries, especially those in the penis and the heart, are dilated when Cialis is taken, dropping the blood pressure temporarily by around 5 to 8 mmHg, even in men with healthy hearts.

Most men with heart issues are advised nitrates, the drugs that dilate arteries by increasing the supply of nitric oxide. And if such men take Cialis accidentally along with nitrates, their blood pressure drops to a potentially dangerous level, needing immediate medical assistance.

Doctors agree that men who take nitrates cannot use Cialis under any circumstance. Similarly, men with heart disease who take alpha-blockers are not advised to use Cialis. When taken together, alpha-blockers and tadalafil significantly decrease your blood pressure.

Considering potential concerns about Cialis and the heart, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has urged caution in ED patients who have recently suffered strokes, heart attacks, or arrhythmias.

Cialis is also contraindicated in men with uncontrolled high blood pressure, a condition that is common in those who have heart disease.

ED pills, including Cialis, have shown heart benefits in animal studies; however, despite that, researchers do not know if the drugs would be safe for people with heart failure. The bottom line is nobody should use Cialis needlessly or recklessly. Men who have ED, but are otherwise healthy, can use Cialis pills, that too only after checking with a doctor.
