Israeli scientists have developed a new method for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) using ultrasound, which could a reliable Viagra alternative and is suitable for men of all ages.

There have been similar developments made by Italian researchers but the technology is not new and is available to men with ED for nearly eight years.

The Daily Mail noted that the ultrasound treatment of ED includes four sessions of sound waves that last for up to minutes each, given once a week.

The whole idea is to trigger the growth of new blood vessels in the penile organ using these waves so that the organ is filled with enough blood for an erection.

More than 40% of men above the age of 40 suffer from some degree of ED. And after crossing 70, the typical signs of ED are already observed in over 70% of the men.

The risk factors associated with ED include age, lifestyle factors – such as smoking and excess alcohol consumption. There are certain physical and psychological conditions responsible for causing ED in men.

It has been found that in ED, the small blood vessels in the penal organ get constricted or damaged, affecting the blood supply to the organ and causing a poor erection.

Viagra is generally the first drug of choice when it comes to treating ED. It contains sildenafil, a drug that has been proven to be effective at boosting erections because it helps improve penile blood flow. However, Viagra does not always work.

That’s because, by the time men start taking Viagra, their penile organ already lacks the necessary blood vessels. And in some men, Viagra may cause side effects.

Nevertheless, the growth of new blood vessels in the penile organ could be triggered using ultrasound waves. In fact, clinical studies have shown the efficacy of this type of technique.

Remember, Viagra is also not advised to men with serious heart diseases or men who have been undergoing treatment with nitrates or alpha-blockers. In such cases, ultrasound therapy could be useful. The article originally appeared on Pledge Times.
